Chapter 2: The Neighbor

I called Mrs. Rivera, the elderly widow next door who had always been kind. She arrived within minutes, took one look at me, and put her arm around my waist without asking questions. She guided me to her car while Mark leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, smiling the small, satisfied smile of a man who believed he had just cleaned a problem out of his life.

“Don’t waste your time coming back,” he said.

The words followed me all the way to the military medical center. Nurses moved quickly once they saw my condition and my military ID. Doctors spoke in calm, precise sentences. Monitors tracked every change. My phone stayed silent on the bedside table—no calls, no messages, not a single question about the child we had created together.

I labored through the night and into the next afternoon. When they placed my son in my arms, the only person who cried was me.
