Chapter 4: The Hospital Door

The afternoon after my son was born, the door to my room opened without a knock.

Mark walked in as if the space belonged to him. Beside him stood an elegantly dressed woman I recognized instantly, though she was not wearing her uniform. A new diamond ring flashed on her left hand. She looked at me with open triumph.

“Seems like you lost,” she said softly.

Mark crossed his arms. “I’ve already moved on.”

I stared at the ring, then at the woman wearing it. Before I could speak, another knock sounded. Every nurse in the room straightened at once.

A three-star Army general stepped inside, stopped at the foot of my bed, and raised his hand in a sharp salute.

“Colonel Anna Whitmore,” he said. “Headquarters directed me to personally present your promotion orders and confirm your new classified command.”

He placed a sealed envelope in my hands.

Then his gaze moved to the woman standing beside Mark.

She snapped to attention so quickly the motion was almost audible.

“Sir,” she said. “I serve as Colonel Whitmore’s executive officer.”

The color drained from Mark’s face in a single wave.
