Chapter 3: The Inheritance

Months earlier my grandfather had died and left me twenty million dollars through a carefully structured family trust. The military legal office handling the transfer had given me one non-negotiable instruction: tell no one until every document was finalized and the funds were fully under my control. That included my husband.
It was not about mistrust.
It was regulation.
At the same time I was seven months pregnant and assigned to classified duties I could not discuss with any civilian. Mark believed I handled routine paperwork for the Department of Defense. He had no idea I was a decorated Army colonel responsible for operations he would never be cleared to hear about.
