Chapter 1: The Blood on the White Silk

Chapter 1: The Blood on the White Silk

The kick landed before anyone in the VIP hospital suite could pretend the tension was just another rich people’s argument.

Khloe Thorne, seven months pregnant, was already unsteady. The heavy perfume and suffocating noise of the fundraising gala downstairs had made her dizzy, forcing her to slip away into the quiet of the upper floors. But there was no peace here. She had backed away until the sharp edge of a mahogany side table hit her spine.

Across from her stood Isabella Rossi. In her tight, blood-red designer dress, chin lifted and eyes glittering, Isabella radiated the cruel confidence of a woman who believed she had already won. For months, Isabella had taunted her—with sharp half-smiles at corporate dinners, private insults whispered in passing, and those lingering, possessive looks at Marcus that made Khloe's public humiliation feel utterly naked.

But right now, the theater was over. The polite cruelty disguised as high-society charm was gone.

“You were supposed to stay quiet,” Isabella hissed, her perfect manicured hands clenching into fists. “Smile for the cameras, play the dutiful billionaire's wife, have the baby, and then quietly disappear. Why can't you just accept that your time is up?”

Khloe tightened one trembling hand over her swollen belly, her voice shaking but determined. “Get out of this room, Isabella. Leave before I call security.”

Instead of leaving, Isabella stepped forward, her face contorting with sudden, vicious fury. “You think that stomach gives you power? It doesn't!”

With a brutal shove, Isabella sent Khloe off balance. Khloe gasped as her spine struck the table hard, sending a crystal champagne glass shattering across the hardwood floor near her feet. Before she could steady herself, Isabella drove the pointed, metallic toe of her stiletto heel directly into Khloe’s left side.

The blow folded Khloe to the floor instantly. A hot, blinding pain tore across her abdomen, stealing the air from her lungs. She collapsed onto her side, clutching her stomach. Her first thought wasn't for the agonizing pain. It was a silent, terrifying plea: Please, God, not my son. Let him breathe.

The heavy suite door suddenly flew open.

Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway, his tuxedo immaculate, his jaw set. Frozen right behind him was Elaine Parker, the frantic gala coordinator. For one impossible second, the room held still like a horrific painting: Khloe on the floor in ruined white silk maternity fabric, Isabella towering over her in violent red, broken glass glittering like diamonds in the light, and Marcus staring.

But Marcus didn't look like a terrified father or a furious husband. He looked like a CEO who had just walked into a financial disaster instead of a human one. His eyes immediately darted from the blood pooling on the white silk to Isabella.

“She attacked me,” Isabella said instantly. Her breathing was shallow, but her voice was remarkably composed, a practiced mask of innocence slipping over her features. “She became hysterical, Marcus. She threw a glass at me. I was only defending myself.”

Khloe looked up from the floor, her vision blurring, waiting for her husband’s outrage. Waiting for him to tackle Isabella, to call for a doctor, to hold her. Instead, Marcus’s jaw tightened with icy, corporate calculation.

“Elaine,” Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he looked back at the coordinator. “Close the door. Lock it. No one else needs to see this.”

Khloe felt something inside her chest go colder than the fear of dying. “She kicked me,” she whispered, her voice cracking as a fresh wave of agony washed over her. “Marcus… look at me. She kicked me.”

Marcus finally crouched down, but he didn't get close enough to touch her. He didn't want the blood on his hands. “Khloe, stop. Don’t make this worse than it already is. You’re upset, you’re emotional. We need to handle this quietly before the press downstairs gets a hold of it. Think of the company stock.”

Before Khloe could even process the sheer cruelty of his words, another voice cut through the suffocating room like a blade of hardened steel.

“No,” Dr. Robert Hayes said from the doorway, throwing the locked door open with enough force to rattle the hinges. “What needs to happen right now is a trauma response.”

The Chief of Medicine and Director of St. Jude’s Hospital stepped into the room. He wore his white lab coat over black scrubs, his eyes instantly fixing on Khloe’s pale face, then shifting to the bloodless terror suddenly washing over Isabella. He didn't spare Marcus more than a single, disgusted glance.

“I saw the entire assault on the corridor security monitor,” Robert said, his voice vibrating with controlled, lethal anger. “And if either of you says another single word that delays my patient's treatment, hospital security will have you thrown out in handcuffs.”

Marcus straightened up, his billionaire privilege flaring. “Dr. Hayes, you don't understand. This is a private family misunderstanding—”

“It is a felony,” Robert snapped, cutting him off without mercy.

Then, the doctor knelt beside Khloe. His entire demeanor shifted instantly, his large, steady hand resting gently on her shoulder, his voice dropping into something deeply protective and tender. “Khloe, look at me. Stay completely still. Tell me exactly where the pain is.”

Marcus blinked, staring at the doctor in genuine confusion. “How do you know her name? Why are you treating this personally, Hayes?”

Robert looked up, and the absolute fury in his eyes became terrifyingly personal.

“Because, Thorne,” Robert growled, “she is my niece.”

Right then, Khloe doubled over with a violent, agonizing cramp, letting out a ragged scream. Robert immediately barked into his radio: “Obstetrics, trauma, and a gurney to VIP Suite 4, now! Possible placental abruption. Emergency response, move!”
