Chapter 5: The Glass Solarium

Chapter 5: The Glass Solarium
Khloe remained in the hospital for six more days. The premature contractions finally eased, and the physical bruises on her side turned an ugly purple before slowly beginning to fade. But while her body healed, her mind grew sharper. The hazy devotion she had once felt for Marcus was gone, replaced by a crystalline, unyielding clarity.
Dr. Robert Hayes kept his promise. He kept a strict twenty-four-hour security detail outside her room, completely blocking Marcus, his PR teams, and his lawyers. Robert also brought in the city's top divorce attorney, making sure every security log and medical report was legally locked down. He never pressured Khloe; he simply gave her a safe fortress to find her footing.
On the seventh day, Khloe decided she was ready. She granted Marcus a single meeting.
They met in the hospital’s glass solarium on the top floor. Warm afternoon sunlight streamed into the room, illuminating Khloe, who sat gracefully by the window in a cream knit dress. One hand rested lightly over her stomach. Robert stood quietly near the exit, a silent, immovable shield giving her space without leaving her unprotected.
The heavy glass doors slid open, and Marcus entered alone. He looked completely drained. The sharp, arrogant billionaire was gone, replaced by a man who looked like he hadn't slept in a week. In his hand, he carried a thick, leather-bound folder, which he placed gently on the table between them.
“It’s a postnuptial restructuring agreement,” Marcus said, his voice trembling slightly as he refused to look her in the eye. “I had my attorneys draft it yesterday. It signs over the penthouse, the country estate, twenty percent of the foundation shares, a permanent trust for our son, and enough liquid assets to ensure you never have to depend on anyone else for the rest of your life.”
Khloe didn't even touch the folder. She looked at it, then looked up at him, her eyes completely detached. “You still think money is the language that matters most, don't you?”
“It’s the only thing I have left to give you that has immediate value,” Marcus admitted, his voice cracking. He finally looked at her, his eyes red and pooling with tears. “I know it’s not enough. Khloe, I failed you long before Isabella ever touched you. I made you lonely in your own home. And when you needed me most, when you were bleeding on that floor, I treated you like a PR complication. I will regret that for the rest of my life. I am so sorry.”

Seeing his tears didn't bring Khloe satisfaction. It only brought a profound sadness for the years she had wasted. Regret was not repair. A sudden confession of truth could not restore a shattered soul.
“For our son’s sake,” she said quietly, her voice steady and calm, “I truly hope you become a better man than the one I saw in that room. But I will not stay married to you long enough to find out.”
