Chapter 4: The Interrogation Room

Chapter 4: The Interrogation Room
The air inside the precinct’s interview room smelled of stale coffee and industrial bleach. Marcus Thorne sat on one side of the metal table, his hands tightly clasped. The high-society billionaire looked entirely out of place beneath the buzzing fluorescent lights.
A detective opened the heavy door, allowing Isabella Rossi to slide into the chair opposite him. The polished glamour she usually wore like armor had completely vanished. Her blood-red dress was wrinkled and stained, her hair was a tangled mess, and mascara was smeared beneath her eyes. Yet, as she looked at Marcus, a bitter, defiant smirk crept onto her lips.
“Was any of it real?” Marcus asked, his voice hollow, echoing slightly against the bare concrete walls.
Isabella let out a dry, mocking laugh that quickly turned into a scoff. “Real? Oh, Marcus. Don’t play the heartbroken victim now. You wanted a beautiful distraction. You wanted someone ruthless enough to worship what you were becoming while your wife was busy being a mother. I gave you exactly the ego stroke you craved. And you paid me in company secrets.”
“You kicked a pregnant woman, Isabella,” Marcus slammed his palm onto the table, his composure finally snapping. “You could have killed my son! Did Vanguard Holdings pay you enough to justify that?”
Isabella didn't flinch. Her eyes narrowed, entirely devoid of remorse. “Khloe was collateral damage. She wasn't supposed to be up there. She was supposed to stay in her lane, sign the divorce papers you were drafting, and let us take over. She got in the way of the final payout, so I cleared the obstacle.”
That word—collateral—shattered the very last of Marcus’s illusions. Disgust rose so fast it felt like physical sickness in his throat. He looked at the woman he had risked his family for and saw nothing but a calculating monster.
“No,” Marcus said, slowly standing up, his voice shaking with a mix of fury and profound shame. “She was my wife. And you didn't destroy her. You just exposed me.”
“Marcus, wait!” Isabella’s smirk vanished, panic finally cracking her voice as he turned toward the door. “You can’t just leave me here! Your company’s reputation is tied to mine. If I go down, Thorne Industries goes down with me!”
Marcus didn't look back. “Then let it burn.”

As he walked out, the heavy steel door slammed shut behind him with a definitive, ringing thud that sounded like a judge's gavel. By morning, the headlines hit the global press, but they weren't the ones Marcus had spent his life trying to manage. The front pages didn't care about his fundraising gala; they blasted news of high-society assault, corporate espionage, and the total downfall of Isabella Rossi.
Upstairs at St. Jude’s Hospital, far away from the media circus, the quiet recovery room was peaceful. The steady, rhythmic hum of the fetal monitor filled the space. Khloe lay in the bed, her pale face illuminated by the morning sun, one hand resting protectively over her stomach. She listened to the heartbeat of her son, understanding with absolute certainty that survival was not the same thing as forgiveness.
