Chapter 6: The Signature of Freedom

Marcus went completely rigid. The color that had barely returned to his face drained away once more. He reached out across the table, his hand stopping just inches away from hers, not daring to make contact.

“Khloe, please,” he pleaded, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. “Don't throw away five years of marriage over a mistake I am actively trying to fix. Isabella is facing federal charges. She’s going to prison for a very long time. I’ve cut every tie. I am cleaning up the mess.”

“I am not divorcing you because of Isabella,” Khloe said, her voice cutting through his desperation like a razor. She turned her gaze directly to him, her eyes completely devoid of the warmth he had taken for granted for half a decade. “I am divorcing you because of you. Isabella didn't make you look at my pain and see a financial liability. You did that all on your own.”

Marcus swallowed hard, a tear tracing a path down his hollow cheek. “I was panicked. I wasn't thinking straight—”

“No, Marcus. You were thinking exactly like yourself,” Khloe interrupted calmly. “The woman who begged for scraps of your attention, the woman who stayed quiet so your stock wouldn't drop—she died on that floor surrounded by broken glass. The woman sitting here today knows exactly what love is not. And it is not you.”

She pulled the leather folder toward herself. Without a single hint of hesitation, she flipped through the pages until she reached the final signature line. Picking up a pen, she signed her name with a fluid, unbroken stroke. The scratching of the pen on paper was the only sound in the vast glass solarium.

She slid the folder back across the table to him.

“My attorney will use these assets as the framework for our divorce,” she said, resting her hand back on her stomach. “You may have a structured place in your son’s life, but only if you prove you can be steady, safe, and humble. But you will never, under any circumstance, have me again.”

Marcus stared down at her signature. The ink was dry, and so was their marriage. He slowly lowered his head, finally understanding a truth his billions could never teach him: power means absolutely nothing when the person you hurt no longer agrees to remain vulnerable to you.

“Khloe…” he choked out.

“Goodbye, Marcus.”

She stood up. Robert stepped forward immediately, placing himself between Marcus and Khloe, guiding his niece toward the exit without a backward glance. Marcus was left completely alone in the sunlit room, holding a multi-million-dollar agreement that had bought him nothing but his own isolation.
