Chapter 9: The Surprising Alliance
The murmurs in the boardroom grew deafening. The chairman cleared his throat, a predatory smile returning to his face. He assumed Khloe had come to crush the man who had publicly humiliated her.
“Very well, Ms. Hayes,” the chairman said, gesturing toward the empty leather seat opposite Marcus. “Since you hold the deciding voting block, let us put the motion to a formal count. The proposal is to strip Marcus Thorne of his title as CEO and expel him from the board immediately. How do you vote?”
Marcus looked across the long glass table at Khloe. He braced himself, closing his eyes. He deserved this. It was the poetic justice high society loved to gossip about.
“I cast my vote,” Khloe’s voice rang out, clear, cold, and entirely steady, “to retain Marcus Thorne as Chief Executive Officer.”
Marcus snapped his eyes open, staring at her in sheer, unadulterated shock.
The chairman slammed his hand on the table, his face turning an angry shade of crimson. “Ms. Hayes, this is absurd! This man brought a public relations nightmare to your doorstep. His mistress tried to kill your child! Why would you protect him?”
Khloe didn't blink. She stood tall at the head of the table, looking down at the board of older men who had expected to use her trauma as their corporate weapon.
“I am not protecting Marcus,” Khloe said, her voice dripping with authority. “I am protecting my son’s future inheritance. Marcus built this company from a garage blueprint. He knows its architecture, its vulnerabilities, and its algorithms better than any corporate raider sitting in this room. If you oust him today, the market panics, the stock bottoms out, and Thorne Industries fragments. I will not allow your greed to devalue my son’s legacy.”
She leaned forward, placing her hands firmly on the glass table, looking directly at her ex-husband.
“Marcus stays. But under one absolute condition.” She signaled her attorney, who distributed a new set of contracts to the board. “A permanent, independent oversight committee will be formed immediately to review all high-level security clearances, corporate ethics, and vendor acquisitions. Marcus will answer directly to this committee. And the chairperson of that committee will be me.”
Marcus realized then, with a profound sense of awe and humility, that Khloe hadn't saved him out of lingering affection. She had saved the company because she was a brilliant, strategic force of nature. She had taken his empire and made herself his absolute equalizer.
The chairman looked at the contracts, realizing he had been completely outmaneuered, and begrudgingly threw down his pen. “Meeting adjourned.”
As the executives filed out of the room, Marcus stayed behind. He walked over to Khloe, his hands shaking. “Khloe… I don’t know what to say. Why did you do that for me?”

“I didn't do it for you, Marcus,” she said coldly, packing her laptop into her leather briefcase. “I did it because unlike you, I don’t let my personal emotions ruin a strategic future. You are a terrible husband, but you are a competent CEO. Keep the stock price high for Ethan. I’ll see you at his custody visit on Thursday. Don’t be late.”
With that, she turned on her heel and walked out, leaving him alone in his kingdom, completely aware that she was now the one who held the crown.
