Chapter 34

Chapter 34: The Invitation to the Feast

The message was delivered to Enzo via an old-school method: a handwritten note left on the windshield of his vehicle, sealed with the signet ring of the Moretti family.
A sit-down. Neutral ground. The Grand Central Terminal Whispering Gallery. Midnight. Bring the ledger.
"It’s a trap, Boss," Marco said over the secure line from New Jersey. "The Morettis don't do neutral ground. They own the transit police in that district. If you step into Grand Central after hours, you’re stepping into an open grave."
Enzo looked across the table at Harper, who was currently reviewing the asset sheets of the Moretti shipping docks. She had heard Marco’s warning, but her expression didn't alter.
"It’s a trap for them," Harper said, looking up at Enzo. "Vincent thinks I’m bringing the notebook. He thinks if he destroys the paper, he destroys the evidence. He doesn't understand that the book is just a prop. I am the ledger."

Enzo walked over to her, his large hand resting on her jaw, forcing her to look into his eyes. "If anything goes wrong in that terminal, Harper, I’m burning New York to the ground. I don't care about the Commission, and I don't care about the family name."
"Nothing is going to go wrong," she murmured, her hand wrapping around his wrist, her freshwater pearl bracelet clicking softly. "Because Vincent Moretti thinks like my father. He thinks fear is an absolute currency. He doesn't know that once you've looked into the dark, a shadow can't scare you anymore."
