Chapter 43: The Brother's Betrayal

The revelation tore through the frozen air of the vault like a physical blow. Enzo staggered backward, his hand hitting the glass of a neighboring display case, his mind refusing to process the ink on the parchment.

"No," Enzo growled, his voice a ragged, broken sound. "Nathan didn't do this. Nathan died trying to save her. I saw the footage. I saw the hidden camera from the terrace. He gave his life to destroy Preston's empire."

"Look at the date, Enzo," Harper whispered, her fingers tracing the glass over the black wedding gown. Her voice was flat, devoid of emotion, the hyper-vigilance of her youth returning to lock her features into stone. "October 2007. This was five years before Nathan ever came to the Chicago house. Five years before he slipped me that card at the gala."

She turned the page of the document with the tip of her knife. Beneath Nathan's signature lay a detailed financial layout of the transatlantic covenant—a secret treaty between the DeLuca family's European shipping branches, the Moretti syndicate, and the Vance lineage in London. Preston Whitcomb hadn't built his empire through fraud; he had been the American clearinghouse for an international human brokerage network that had operated for half a century. And the price for his seat at the table was the future of his daughter.

Nathan hadn't been tracking Preston to save a helpless child; he had been tracking him to enforce the contract his father had signed before him. The "hero" who had died in the Chicago alleys hadn't been a savior—he had been a collector coming to claim a debt.

"He lied to me," Enzo murmured, his eyes fixed on his brother's handwriting. Every memory of his childhood, every sacrifice he thought he had made to avenge Nathan’s death, dissolved into a pile of ash. The noble investigator was a ghost created by his own guilt. "My whole life... the feuds, the blood, the marriage... it was all written before I ever took the throne."

"Not all of it," Harper said, turning to face him, her eyes burning with a sudden, terrifying clarity. "Nathan died, Enzo. Someone killed him in that alley. And if it wasn't my father, and it wasn't the Morettis... then who killed the man who came to collect me?"
