Chapter 49: The Zurich Ledger

The fire in the Surrey library consumed the body of Leo DeLuca, the ancient wood of the manor house catching the flame within minutes as Enzo and Harper retreated into the cold autumn night. They didn't speak as they drove back toward London, the sky behind them glowing with a dull, angry orange that matched the ruins of Geneva and Chicago.

The war wasn't over; it had merely been stripped of its illusions.

They returned to the Brooklyn loft three days later. The city was under a heavy blanket of early gray fog, the harbor silent and gray. Marco met them at the door, his face grim, a fresh stack of intelligence reports in his hand.

"The Morettis are completely quiet, Boss," Marco said, stepping into the kitchen where Harper was currently holding little Lilian against her chest, her movements mechanical, her eyes fixed on the empty space of the wall. "But the European markets are in a panic. Someone just liquidated the entire asset reserve of the Belgrave Group in London. Two billion dollars, moved into a blind routing number in Hong Kong."

Enzo took the reports, his fingers tracing the international transaction lines. "It’s the secondary switch, Marco. Leo was just the manager. The covenant has other boards. Other seats."

Harper walked over to the table, her face thin and pale, her freshwater pearl bracelet clicking against the wood as she laid her leather notebook down beside his files. She hadn't spoken since the library in Surrey, her silence a physical wall between them.

"The Hong Kong account belongs to the Vance-Cheng Logistics Corporation," she said, her voice dry, clear, and entirely devoid of life. "They handle the deep-water shipping lanes between Shanghai and Vancouver. My father used to say that if the European branch ever fell, the eastern line would activate automatically. It’s a self-healing loop, Enzo. You can't kill a shadow by shooting the man holding the flashlight."

She looked up at him, her blue eyes completely vacant, the connection they had built over a year of survival fractured by the ghost of his brother. "I'm leaving tomorrow, Enzo. I’m taking Lillian to the sanctuary in Switzerland. You can't look at me without seeing the alley where Nathan died. And I can't look at you without seeing the belt my father used to buy my seat at this table."
