Chapter 42: The Vault of Tears

Zürich in November was a landscape of gray limestone and black water, the Limmat River cutting through the city like a scalpel. The Aethelgard Foundation sat on a quiet, cobblestone alleyway in the Altstadt, its facade indistinguishable from the centuries-old guild houses surrounding it. It wore no corporate logo, no security cameras, and no grand gates. It didn't need them; the Swiss police precinct was less than a hundred yards away, and the board of directors included three members of the federal council.

Enzo and Harper entered through the heavy bronze doors at 2:00 AM, the silver falcon key clutched in Harper’s palm. They were met by an elderly clerk with white hair and eyes like polished glass, who didn't ask for their names or passports. He simply looked at the key, bowed with an ancient, mechanical deference, and led them down a spiral staircase carved directly into the bedrock beneath the city.

The vault chamber was freezing, the air smelling of ozone and old velvet. It contained no gold bars, no bearer bonds, and no digital servers. Instead, row after row of floor-to-ceiling glass display cases lined the walls, each one containing a single, perfectly preserved item of clothing.

"These are the covenants," Harper whispered, her voice shaking as her flashlight beam swept the room.

She stopped before a case in the center of the vault. Inside, hanging from a velvet mannequin, was an exact duplicate of her own wedding dress—the high-neck Victorian lace, the heavy layers of silk, and the long row of freshwater pearl buttons. But this dress wasn't white. It was dyed a deep, suffocating midnight black.

Pinned to the collar of the black gown was a handwritten document dated October 14, 2007—the day Harper turned eleven years old. It was a formal marriage contract, signed not by Preston Whitcomb, but by a signature that caused the blood to drain entirely from Enzo’s face: Nathan DeLuca.
