Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Sacrifice.

My mother unbuckled her belt and leaned over the center console to grab the steering wheel.
My father kicked his door open, leaning out into the rushing wind.
He aimed the revolver at the nearest sedan and fired three deafening shots.
The sedan's front tire exploded in a shower of sparks and rubber.
The car flipped wildly, crashing into the second pursuing vehicle in a ball of fiery wreckage.
"You did it!" I cried, a brief wave of relief washing over me.
But my father didn't pull himself back into the car.
He looked back at us, clutching his stomach where a dark red stain was rapidly spreading.
He had been hit during the shootout in the suite.
"Dad, no!" I screamed, lunging forward to grab his coat.
"Keep her safe, Martha," he whispered, a sad smile touching his lips.
Before we could stop him, he rolled out of the moving SUV onto the dark highway.
My mother screamed, slamming on the brakes, but it was too late.

He was gone, sacrificing himself to buy us the time we needed to disappear.
I buried my face in my hands, weeping uncontrollably as we drove into the desolate night.
