THE MATRIMONY OF CARNAGE / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - A Cold Dawn.

We abandoned the bullet-riddled SUV on a dirt road miles outside the city limits.

The morning sun broke through the clouds, casting a harsh light on my ruined wedding dress.

My mother and I walked in silence toward a small, rundown diner on the edge of the highway.

We had no money, no phones, and no identities.

Julian had stripped me of everything before the ceremony even began.

We slipped into the diner's restroom to wash the blood from our skin.

I stared at my reflection in the cracked mirror, barely recognizing the woman looking back.

My face was swollen, and my eyes were hollow and dead.

"We need a plan," my mother said, handing me a stolen oversized hoodie to cover my dress.

"He controls the police, the judges, the entire city," I replied, my voice devoid of hope.

"Then we find someone who hates him as much as we do," she stated firmly.

I remembered a name Julian had cursed during one of his drunken rages.

Marcus Thorne.

He was a former partner who had barely escaped Julian's wrath two years ago.

"I know where we have to go," I told her, a newfound spark of vengeance igniting in my chest.
