Chapter 16: The Ledger of Blood

The hallway fell into an oppressive, suffocating silence.

The woman holding the green leather folder was not Anna Ward. She was younger, with high, angular cheekbones and eyes that carried the same fierce, unyielding gaze Rebecca had seen in her mother’s old photographs.

Grace.

Richard stepped back as if struck by an invisible weight, his hand gripping the marble balustrade to steady himself. "Grace..." he breathed, his voice barely a rasp. "You shouldn't have come here."

"I had to finish what my mother started, Mr. Vale," Grace said, her voice steady, crisp, and devoid of fear. "Because you paid my mother to keep quiet, but you couldn't buy my silence."

Rebecca stood up slowly, her hand resting instinctively over her pregnant belly. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She looked from her father’s pale, guilt-ridden face to the unknown woman standing only a few feet away.

"What is she talking about, Dad?" Rebecca asked, her voice dangerously calm. "What did you do the night Elise Ward disappeared?"

Richard couldn't look at her. "Rebecca... it wasn't what you think. I was protecting the company. I was protecting you."

"Stop lying to her!" Grace’s voice sliced through the corridor. She opened the green leather folder and pulled out a yellowed document, tossing it onto the conference room table between them. "This isn't just a settlement agreement, Rebecca. This is a silence contract signed by Richard Vale and Malcolm Harlan. They didn't just hide Malcolm's crimes—they shared the liability. Your father didn't just protect Malcolm; he bought a fifteen percent stake in Harlan Strategic Consulting to cover up my mother's assault."

Maya Chen immediately stepped forward, pulling on surgical gloves before picking up the document. She scanned the signatures at the bottom.

"It's valid," Maya whispered, looking up at Richard with a mixture of professional detachment and disgust. "Dated twenty-four years ago. Co-signed by Richard Vale."

Rebecca felt a cold wave wash over her. Every boundary, every piece of advice, every protective instinct Richard had shown over the last few months suddenly reeked of self-preservation. He hadn't just been trying to save his daughter from Trevor; he had been frantically trying to keep the thread from unraveling back to his own corporate sins.

"You built my safety on a foundation of money paid to assault victims," Rebecca said, her voice trembling not from fear, but from a rage so pure it terrified her. "You let me marry Trevor because you were afraid if you fought Malcolm too hard, he’d release this."

"Rebecca, listen to me—" Richard reached out, his hands shaking.

"Don't touch me," she snapped, stepping back. "Don't ever touch me again."

Before Richard could speak, Maya’s phone chimed with a high-priority alert. She checked the screen, her expression darkening instantly.

"Rebecca," Maya said softly, her eyes locked on her screen. "We have a problem. The prosecutor's office just called. Trevor's bail conditions were breached twenty minutes ago. His electronic ankle monitor was found cut off in a parking garage two miles from here."

The air in the room vanished. Rebecca’s grip on the table tightened.

"Where is he?" Rebecca asked, her throat dry.

Maya looked up, her face pale. "He's on the move. And he isn't alone."
