Chapter 29

Chapter 29: The Unbroken Thread

On the third anniversary of the night Trevor struck her, Rebecca took Emma and Noah to the public park in downtown Portland.
It was a bright, breezy afternoon. Children ran across the grass, parents sat on benches drinking coffee, and the sound of street musicians filled the air.
Rebecca sat on a wooden bench, watching Emma play on the swings while holding Noah on her lap. She felt completely, profoundly at peace.
Her phone chimed. It was a message from Detective Dana Ortiz, who had been promoted to Captain of the Domestic Violence Unit in New York.
Thought you should know, Rebecca. We passed the 'Rebecca Vance Act' in the state legislature today. Coercive control, electronic surveillance, and financial abuse are now felony offenses in the state of New York.
Rebecca smiled, typing a quick reply:
Thank you, Dana. For listening to me when I was sitting bleeding on that blue sofa.
She put her phone away and took a deep breath of the spring air.
She thought back to the girl she had been three years ago—twenty-five weeks pregnant, hiding her bruises, apologizing for her husband's rage, lying to her father, and believing that survival meant keeping the peace at all costs.
That girl was gone. Replaced by a woman who had pulled down an empire of silence with her bare hands.
Noah reached up, his tiny fingers grasping the silver chain around Rebecca’s neck. Hanging from the chain was a small, smooth pendant made of polished white stone—crafted from a piece of marble taken from the threshold of her new house.
It was a symbol not of what had been broken, but of the foundation she had built for her children.

"Mama! Watch me!" Emma shouted from the swings, pumping her legs high into the air, soaring toward the blue sky.
"I’m watching, baby!" Rebecca called back, her voice clear, resonant, and free. "I’m right here!"
