Chapter 28: The Legacy of Catherine

Spring returned, thawing the coastal soil and bringing green shoots through the dark earth.

Rebecca spent the morning in the garden behind her house, planting sunflowers along the wooden fence. Emma sat in the dirt beside her, carefully placing seeds into the small holes Rebecca dug.

Maya Chen drove up the driveway, stepping out of her car holding an official legal folder.

"Is this work, or a social visit?" Rebecca called out, wiping soil from her hands.

"A little bit of both," Maya said, walking over and leaning on the fence. "The final liquidations of the Vale corporate assets were completed yesterday. The Catherine Vance Foundation now holds an endowment of eighty-five million dollars."

"Good," Rebecca said, nodding. "Is the board fully operational?"

"Grace is managing the domestic violence shelters, and the board just approved a new legal defense fund for women facing coercive control in family courts," Maya said, smiling pridefully. "We're calling it the Vance Accord."

"My father... did he sign the final release papers?"

"Yes," Maya said. "He asked me to give you a letter. He didn't write much. Just one sentence."

Maya handed Rebecca a small cream envelope. Rebecca opened it. Inside, in Richard’s shaky, aging script, were the words:

You were stronger than all of us.

Rebecca folded the note and tucked it into her pocket. She didn't feel hatred for Richard anymore. She felt a quiet, distant sadness for a man who had chosen power over intimacy, control over trust, and had ended his life alone in a quiet cottage, surrounded by the silence he had spent millions to maintain.

"What about Trevor?" Rebecca asked quietly.

"He filed another appeal last week," Maya said. "Claiming ineffective counsel. The appellate court rejected it within two hours without a hearing. He has nine years left on his sentence."

Rebecca looked down at her hands, still dark with the rich soil of her garden.

"He's where he belongs," Rebecca said simply. "Not out of revenge. But because the world needs to be safe from him."
