Chapter 18: The Broken Vault

The Harlan estate stood like a dark monolith against the stormy night sky, surrounded by dense pine trees and high stone walls.

Rebecca sat in the back of an unmarked police vehicle three hundred yards from the entrance, flanked by Maya and two armed officers. Detective Ortiz’s radio crackled with low, rhythmic updates from the tactical team surrounding the perimeter.

"Entry team is in position," a voice static-drifted through the speaker. "Rear door shows signs of forced entry. Visual confirmation of one male suspect inside the main library. It's Trevor."

Rebecca watched the thermal camera feed on the tactical monitor. A single heat signature moved erratically through the ground floor of the mansion.

Suddenly, a second heat signature appeared on the screen—taller, moving slower from the hallway toward the library.

"Wait," Ortiz said, leaning closer to the screen. "Who is the second individual?"

The radio burst with static. "Command, we have a second subject on scene. Senior male. It's Malcolm Harlan."

Rebecca gasped. Malcolm hadn't sent help for Trevor. He had gone there himself.

"Switch to audio surveillance," Ortiz ordered.

The police had planted directional microphones against the library’s exterior windows. Through the static, two voices emerged—sharp, bitter, and echoing with decades of unspent rage.

"You idiot!" Malcolm's voice boomed through the speaker. "Cutting your monitor? Running here? You’ve brought the federal authorities directly to my doorstep!"

"You told me to take control!" Trevor screamed back, his voice unhinged, cracking under pressure. "You said fear was the only thing people respected! I did what you taught me! I took the drive, I made the files, I hit her just like you hit Mom!"

A loud crack echoed through the audio—the unmistakable sound of an open hand striking face.

"Don't you ever compare yourself to me," Malcolm hissed, his voice lethal. "I built an empire. You got caught by a twenty-five-year-old girl because you couldn't even manage your own household without leaving a trail of blood on the rug."

Silence stretched across the feed.

In the police van, Rebecca gripped Maya’s hand. The sickening cycle was playing out in real-time—the father punishing the son for failing to execute the very abuse he had been taught.

"Give me the key to the lower safe," Malcolm demanded cold-bloodedly. "I am taking the bonds and leaving tonight. You can take your chances with the state troopers."

"No," Trevor whispered. "You're not leaving me behind."

"You're dead weight, Trevor. You always were."

A heavy crash sounded through the microphone—the sound of furniture splintering, followed by violent shouting and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the hardwood floor.

"Move in!" Ortiz shouted into her radio. "Tactical team, move in now! Clear the building!"
