Chapter 23: The Press Conference

The grand ballroom of the Manhattan Regency Hotel was packed with over two hundred journalists, camera crews, and financial analysts.

Cameras flashed continuously as Rebecca walked onto the stage. She wore a simple black suit, her hair pulled back tightly. She carried no notes. Beside her sat Maya Chen and Grace Ward.

Richard Vale sat in the front row of the audience, looking frail, surrounded by security guards he no longer controlled.

Rebecca stepped up to the podium. The room fell into an expectant hush.

"Thank you for coming," Rebecca began, her voice carrying clearly through the room without a tremor. "Over the past six months, the public has read many stories about my family. You have heard about domestic violence, custody battles, billionaire trusts, and corporate rivalries. You were told this was a private family war."

She paused, looking directly into the primary network camera.

"It was not a family war," she continued. "It was an enterprise of silence."

She pressed a button on the remote in her hand. The giant screens behind her lit up with documents—the full, unredacted financial records of Aegis Holdings, the offshore accounts tied to Malcolm Harlan, and the signature pages signed by Richard Vale and the trustees in Zurich.

Gasps echoed through the room. Financial reporters immediately began frantically typing on their laptops.

"These documents," Rebecca announced, "detail thirty years of systemic financial extortion and personal destruction. They show how powerful men used private investigators, shell corporations, and physical violence to control women, silence victims, and launder illicit funds through residential real estate."

A reporter stood up, shouting over the din. "Ms. Vale! Are you accusing your own father’s firm of criminal conspiracy?"

Rebecca looked down at Richard. Their eyes met. Richard closed his eyes and slowly nodded—a silent, final surrender.

"I am turning these files over to the United States Attorney’s Office and the International Revenue Service today," Rebecca stated firmly. "Every asset tied to Aegis Holdings within my control is being transferred into a public trust for victims of corporate and domestic abuse. I am waiving all inheritance rights to the Vale estate."

She leaned closer to the microphone.

"To the trustees in Geneva who sent me a threat three days ago: my name is Rebecca Vance. I do not buy silence. And I do not pay debts written in blood."
