Chapter 13 - The cottage

I stayed in the cottage after the assault.
People asked why.
Because it was my home.
Not legally mine.
Emotionally mine.
The trust’s lawyers offered a hotel.
A secure apartment.
A friend offered her guesthouse.
I said no.
Police had removed Ethan from direct access to me through temporary protective conditions.
Vanessa remained in the mansion for a period, then left voluntarily.
Security locks changed.
A retired police officer stayed on property for several nights.
I was safe enough.
The cottage held Thomas’s old chair.
My books.
My coffee mug with a chipped green rim.
The herb garden.
Grief had shrunk my life there.
Recovery expanded it again.
I started walking the property.
Not near the mansion first.
Then closer.
The broken patio door was boarded.
I hated seeing it.
One morning I stood fifty feet away.
Samuel was with me.
He said:
“You don’t have to do this.”
“I know.”
That was why I could.
Choice changes a place.
I walked to the terrace.
Looked at the blood stain? There was none. Rain and cleanup had already removed it.
Good.

No memorial.
I left.
