Chapter 23 - The mansion is sold

I surprised everyone.

Including Samuel.

I asked Northstar to consider selling the Greenwich property.

He stared.

“You fought to protect it.”

“No.”

“You invoked the trust after Ethan told you to leave it.”

“I fought to stop him taking control of the trust.”

“Different.”

“Yes.”

Northstar evaluated.

The mansion and cottage together required significant maintenance.

I had no desire to live in the main house.

Ethan no longer lived there.

The property had become a monument to an argument no one needed.

The trustee approved a sale.

Price:

Just under $5 million after negotiations.

Higher than the prior trust carrying value.

The trust reinvested proceeds.

I bought? No.

The trust purchased a smaller condominium for my use in Old Greenwich under its support provisions.

Two bedrooms.

Water view.

Elevator.

No cottage.

No family compound.

Samuel said:

“Thomas would hate the HOA.”

“I know.”

That made me happy.

Before moving, I spent one final afternoon in the cottage.

I lifted the loose floorboard.

The safe was empty except for copies awaiting transfer.

The black phone had been replaced with a normal secure contact app on my regular phone.

I laughed.
