Chapter 25 - I see Ethan

Two years and four months after the glass door, I agreed to meet my son.

Neutral place.

Not lawyer’s office.

Not my home.

A small restaurant near Stamford.

Samuel asked:

“Do you want me there?”

“No.”

“Security?”

“No.”

“You are going to make me nervous until I die.”

“You’re seventy-four. Something will.”

“Very comforting.”

Ethan arrived early.

He looked thinner.

Older.

No tailored suit.

Blue shirt.

He stood when I entered.

Did not approach.

“Mom.”

“Ethan.”

We sat.

For several minutes, menus.

Weather.

Absurd.

Then he said:

“I’m sorry about the glass.”

I looked at him.

“Not the glass.”

He stopped.

Then nodded.

“I’m sorry I pushed you.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t help you.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry I tried to use the trust like it meant I outranked you.”

That one surprised me.

“Okay.”

He swallowed.

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

His eyes filled.

I continued:

“I was afraid of you.”

That hurt more.

He looked down.

“Are you now?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Good answer.

He nodded.

We ate.

Not reconciliation.

One meal.

He paid for his own lunch.

May you like

I paid for mine.

That detail pleased me more than it should have.
