Chapter 17 - THE BOARD MEETINGMercer Millwork’s board removed Julian from financial authority temporarily.

Not fired.

Administrative leave from president duties pending investigation.

He kept his ownership.

Salary partly suspended under company policy.

The decision was not mine.

That mattered.

Independent board members.

Counsel.

Bank concerns.

Forensic accountants.

Julian exploded anyway.

“You did this.”

“No.”

“You started it.”

“Dad started the review.”

“He was dying.”

“He was still allowed to ask where money went.”

“You think I didn’t keep that company alive?”

“I think you did.”

That surprised him.

I continued:

“I also think keeping it alive does not automatically authorize whatever method you choose.”

He looked destroyed.

Then angry.

“Dad would have lost Mercer without me.”

“Maybe.”

“You know it.”

“I know you mattered.”

His face twisted.

“Then act like it.”

There was the tragedy.

Julian believed value earned permission.

He had worked hardest.

Therefore boundaries felt like insults.

He had kept the company alive.

Therefore company resources felt morally available.

He had cared for Dad.

Therefore Dad’s hesitation felt like ingratitude.

That logic had not started with crime.

It had started with entitlement disguised as sacrifice.
