Chapter 23 - SAMUEL READS THE LAST NOTEThe sixth folder was not financial.

It was estate administration.

Dad’s actual will.

Share-transfer instructions.

Personal property list.

Nothing shocking.

No secret disinheritance.

Julian did not lose everything.

I did not inherit the company because I had the key.

Dad’s estate plan had been updated months before the investigation began.

His Mercer shares were divided:

A portion to me.

A portion to Julian.

A portion to an employee trust.

The exact distribution recognized Julian’s years at the company without giving him automatic control.

Julian hated that.

But it was not revenge for the audit.

The timing proved it.

Then Samuel read Dad’s final handwritten note.

Not from the flash drive.

Paper.

Three paragraphs.

He addressed both of us.

Elena, a key is not ownership. Do not confuse being trusted with being entitled.

I cried.

Then:

Julian, work is not ownership either. Do not confuse sacrifice with permission.

Julian stared at the floor.

Then:

If I have been wrong about either of you, prove me wrong by what you do after I am gone.

That was Dad.

No sentimental:

Love each other.

No:

Family above everything.

May you like

A challenge.

Annoying to the end.
