Chapter 6 - DAD’S FIRST DOUBTDad discovered the issue because of payroll.

Not because he was secretly auditing Julian.

A payroll clerk called him.

One Friday, there was concern about timing on a tax deposit.

Dad had always been obsessive about payroll taxes.

“You borrow from yourself before you borrow from withholding.”

He used to say that.

The clerk said cash was tight.

Dad was surprised.

Mercer Millwork had recently drawn on its line specifically to smooth working capital.

So he asked for the cash report.

Then vendor detail.

One supplier name bothered him.

North Field Consulting LLC.

Dad had never heard of it.

Payments:

$18,500.

$22,000.

$19,750.

Consulting.

Project strategy.

Operational sourcing.

Vague.

Dad asked Julian.

According to Dad’s notes, Julian answered:

“Temporary project management support.”

Dad asked which project.

Julian said:

“Riverside.”

There was a Riverside Hotel renovation.

Real project.

Real problems.

Plausible.

Dad called the project manager.

He had never heard of North Field.

That was when Dad called Samuel.

Again:

Suspicion.

May you like

Not proof.

Folder Two waited.
