Chapter 20 - AM I MY BROTHER’S ENEMY?Julian stopped speaking to me.

For four months.
Then one morning he appeared at my office.
No warning.
Reception called.
I almost said no.
Then agreed to a conference room.
He looked thinner.
No suit.
No attorney.
I said:
“We cannot discuss the investigation without counsel if you are trying to negotiate facts.”
“I’m not.”
“Then what?”
He put Dad’s old fountain pen on the table.
I recognized it.
“Where did you get that?”
“Dad gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
I waited.
Julian said:
“I hated you when he gave you the key.”
“I noticed.”
“I thought he trusted you more.”
“That isn’t what he said.”
“What did he say?”
“He said you already thought everything in the safe belonged to you.”
Julian laughed once.
Then covered his face.
“Sounds like him.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then:
“I did not think I was stealing.”
I said nothing.
“I thought Marlow would sell. I’d put everything back.”
“Did Dad know?”
“Not all of it.”
There.
“Did he approve the forty?”
Julian stared at the pen.
“No.”
My chest tightened even though I knew.
“Why transfer it?”
“I thought he was scared because he was sick.”
“That is not permission.”
“I know.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
He began crying.

“I kept telling myself he would thank me when everything worked.”
It never did.
