Chapter 13 - AMANDA COMES TO REHABThree weeks after surgery, I began outpatient physical therapy.

My brace allowed controlled motion.
Fifteen degrees felt like betrayal.
Thirty degrees felt impossible.
After one session, I came out and found Amanda in the parking lot.
I stopped.
She raised both hands.
“I’m not here to fight.”
“You should leave.”
“Monica.”
“Leave.”
“I’m your mother.”
“You clapped when Austin broke my knee.”
Her face twisted.
“I was in shock.”
“You insulted me.”
“I was angry.”
“So was he.”
That landed.
She lowered her eyes.
“I said something unforgivable.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t know he would hit you.”
“Did you know about Kathleen’s refinance?”
Her head snapped up.
“Do not talk about that in a parking lot.”
Interesting answer.
“What did you know?”
“Nothing criminal.”
Again.
Not nothing.
“Did you know Naomi’s marriage was invalid?”
“No.”
“Did you know Austin wasn’t divorced?”
“I thought the paperwork was done.”
“Did you see the decree?”
“No.”
I watched her.
“I don’t believe you.”
She started crying.
“That doesn’t make it false.”
True.

I hated truth when it helped people I was angry at.
She left.
