Chapter 23 - AUSTIN’S PLEAThe assault evidence was strong.

The financial case was also substantial but technically complex.

Austin eventually entered negotiated pleas resolving the principal violent-assault count and the strongest forgery/fraud-related conduct.

He admitted hitting my knee with the tire iron.

He did not call it an accident.

That mattered.

He admitted participating in forged refinance documentation and knowingly misrepresenting Kathleen’s participation.

He admitted the decree shown to Naomi was not court-issued.

Several narrower or duplicative theories were dismissed under the agreement.

Sentencing considered:

Serious bodily injury to me.

Use of a weapon.

Financial loss.

Repeated deception.

No prior violent felony record.

Acceptance of responsibility came late but existed.

Restitution.

Business collapse.

No life sentence.

No absurd seventy-year punishment.
