Chapter 5 - SURGERYThey opened my knee at 7:11 the morning after my birthday.

I remember being wheeled toward the operating room and thinking:

The cake is still on my table.

Trauma logic.

Dr. Monroe repaired the kneecap with screws and a fixation construct that sounded industrial enough to match the tire iron.

Surgery went well.

No magical recovery.

Pain when the nerve block faded was vicious.

The first physical therapist asked me to tighten my quadriceps.

Nothing happened.

My brain said contract.

My leg said no.

I cried.

She said:

“That’s normal.”

I hated normal.

Amanda arrived that afternoon.

Hospital security stopped her because I had restricted visitors.

She called me.

I answered once.

“What?”

“You cannot keep me out.”

“I can while I’m a patient.”

“Your brother is missing.”

“Then call him.”

“He’s terrified.”

“My kneecap is screwed back together.”

“Monica, you destroyed his marriage.”

“Which one?”

Silence.

I hung up.

Bad daughter.

Excellent decision.
