Chapter 10

Part 10: The Cease and Desist

The peace we built in the following weeks was absolute, but the legal echo of Eleanor's downfall continued to ripple through high society. Letters from Eleanor’s defense attorneys arrived at our doorstep daily, pleading for a conditional mediation, offering to return the siphoned funds in exchange for a signed non-disclosure agreement and a request for clemency from my father's side of the family.
I called a meeting in Marcus's office, sitting across from their lead defense counsel, a sharp, corporate lawyer named Thomas Sterling.
"Mr. Whitmore," Sterling said, adjusting his glasses with a practiced, insincere sympathy. "Your mother is an aging woman with significant social standing. A public trial for grand larceny and identity fraud will permanently tarnish the Whitmore name. We are prepared to return the full two.five million dollars to Maya’s trust today, provided you sign this affidavit stating the medical document interception was an administrative misunderstanding."
"Tell my mother that the Whitmore name died the moment she left my pregnant wife to faint on a bedroom floor," I said, my voice cold and flat as I slid the documents back across the table. "The trust funds have already been recovered by the federal asset seizure unit. We don't need her compliance. And we certainly don't need her money."

Marcus stepped forward, throwing a copy of the hidden camera transcripts onto the table. "We have also filed a formal request for a lifetime protective injunction. If any associate, lawyer, or representative of Eleanor Whitmore comes within one thousand feet of Clara, Ethan, or their child, it will constitute an immediate violation of federal probation. The negotiation is over, Mr. Sterling."
Sterling looked at the undeniable evidence, his confident posture completely collapsing as he realized my mother had no leverage left. He silently packed his files into his briefcase and walked out, leaving the office profoundly quiet.
