Chapter 9

Part 9: Clara’s Return

Four days later, I brought Clara and baby Maya home from the hospital. The apartment had been completely transformed. The stained drywall had been repainted a soft, clean cream color, the tangled sheets were gone, and in place of the shattered portrait from Screenshot_16.jpg, a beautiful, empty silver frame hung on the wall, waiting for our first photograph as a family of three.
Clara walked into the bedroom slowly, holding Maya against her chest. She looked up at the empty frame, a long, peaceful breath escaping her lips.
"It feels light in here now, Ethan," she said softly, sitting on the edge of the freshly made bed.
"The locks have been changed, the security system has been completely rewritten, and Eleanor’s accounts have been frozen," I said, kneeling in front of her and gently unbuckling Maya from her carrier wrap. "Marcus called me on the drive over. The federal judge refused bail. She’s staying in custody until the trial."

Clara reached down, her soft fingers brushing my jawline. "You don't have to carry the weight of those sixty seconds of doubt anymore, Ethan. You looked at a nightmare, but you chose to see the truth when it mattered most."
"I love you, Clara," I whispered, pressing my forehead against hers as Maya let out a tiny, soft yawn between us. "I will spend the rest of my life ensuring no shadow ever touches this room again."
