Chapter 6

Part 6: The Shattered Matrix

After escorting Eleanor out of the maternity wing with the help of hospital security, I stood in the quiet hallway, leaning my head against the cool drywall. The image of our bedroom from the night before—the scene captured in Screenshot_16.jpg—kept replaying in my mind. The shattered glass spiderwebbing perfectly over my own face in our wedding portrait hadn't been an act of domestic malice. It was a desperate scream for survival.

I pulled out my phone and called Marcus, our family’s corporate attorney and my closest friend.

"Ethan," Marcus answered on the first ring. "How is Clara? Is the baby okay?"

"They're alive, Marcus, but barely," I said, my voice cracking with exhaustion. "My mother intercepted Clara's cardiovascular reports from the clinic. She knew Clara was developing severe gestational hypertension, and instead of telling me, she used that information to construct a narrative over the phone that Clara was hiding a secret pregnancy complication from a past relationship. She wanted me to walk into that apartment expecting a betrayal."

Marcus let out a low, grim breath. "Eleanor has been playing a high-stakes game for months, Ethan. I didn't want to bring this to you while Clara was in her third trimester, but our forensic accounting unit flagged several massive unauthorized withdrawals from your grandfather's foundational trust. The signatures match your mother's handwriting, but the authorization stamps are forged."

The pieces of the puzzle instantly locked together. Eleanor didn't hate Clara because of her personality; she hated Clara because Clara was a certified public auditor. Eleanor knew that once the baby was born and Clara returned to managing our joint estate, she would immediately notice the missing trust dividends.

"She wanted us divorced before the annual audit next month," I whispered, the cold reality settling deep into my bones. "She wanted me to abandon Clara in that bedroom so she could declare her mentally unstable and take over the trust's executorship."

"If you can secure the physical mail she intercepted from your apartment, we have enough for a federal indictment for identity theft and mail fraud," Marcus said. "But you need to find where she hid the original clinic documents."

"I'm going back to the apartment now," I said, looking through the glass window at Clara, who was peacefully feeding Maya. "I'm going to clear the mess, and I'm going to find exactly what my mother left behind."
