Chapter 3

Part 3

The sterile white walls and bright fluorescent lights of the emergency department felt like a different universe. Within minutes of our arrival, Clara had been swept away by a team of high-risk obstetricians. I was left pacing the waiting room floor, my black suit wrinkled and my hands still shaking from the adrenaline.
Two hours later, the heavy double doors of the surgical wing swung open. My mother walked in, dressed immaculately in a designer wool coat, her pearl earrings catching the harsh hospital light. She didn't look worried; she looked annoyed, flanked by my older brother, Julian, who was checking his watch.
"Ethan, thank goodness," Eleanor said, stepping forward with an exaggerated sigh of relief. "The hospital automated system sent an alert to the family emergency contact list. What on earth is going on? I told Clara hours ago that she was simply experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions. There was absolutely no need to create such a dramatic scene and drag everyone down here in the middle of the night."
I stopped pacing. I turned to look at my mother, seeing her clearly for the first time in my life. The elegant facade, the aristocratic poise—it was all a mask for a deeply controlling, malicious woman who couldn't stand the fact that I had chosen Clara over her family dynasty.
"She wasn't exaggerating, Mom," I said, my voice dangerously low, echoing off the linoleum floor. "Clara had a placental abruption. She was internalizing internal hemorrhaging for six hours while you told her to stay in bed. If I hadn't caught an earlier flight home, she and my daughter would have bled to death on our bedroom floor."
Eleanor’s face shifted, a brief flicker of panic crossing her features before she quickly smoothed it over. "Well... how was I supposed to know? Clara has always been overly sensitive about her pregnancy. I was merely trying to keep her calm."
"No, you were trying to punish her," I countered, taking a predatory step toward her. Julian stepped between us, but I shoved him back with a force that shocked him. "You’ve spent the last year whispering doubts into my ear, trying to convince me that Clara was untrustworthy, all because she refused to let you control our finances and our child's upbringing. You ignored her medical emergency because you wanted her to crawl back to you begging for help."
"Ethan, mind your tongue!" Eleanor hissed, her aristocratic voice dropping to an icy register. "I am your mother. Everything I have ever done has been to protect our family's wealth and legacy from outsiders!"

"Clara is my family now," I said, pulling my wedding ring off my finger and holding it up to her face before sliding it firmly back onto my hand. "And as of tonight, you are completely cut off. You will never see me, you will never see my wife, and you will never, ever lay eyes on your granddaughter. If you attempt to contact us, I will use my position at the development firm to systematically pull our family funding from your foundation."
Eleanor went completely pale, her mouth parting in utter disbelief as Julian held her arm to keep her steady. For the first time in her life, she had lost her leverage over her youngest son.
