Chapter 11

Part 11: The Document under the Floorboards

A month after the hospital discharge, Clara’s professional instincts as an auditor finally led to the ultimate revelation. We were packing up the remaining boxes in our guest closet to convert the space into Maya’s nursery when Clara noticed a loose floorboard near the structural support beam.
"Ethan, look at this," she said, kneeling down and tapping the wood.
I knelt beside her, pulling the loose panel free. Tucked deep inside the subfloor was a thick, black leather folder containing a document we had never seen before—a forged postnuptial amendment dated three months prior to Maya's birth.
The document stated that in the event of a divorce triggered by "marital infidelity or mental instability," absolute custody of any future children would automatically transfer to Eleanor Whitmore as the primary corporate trustee, along with fifty percent of our personal real estate assets. My signature at the bottom was a flawless, high-resolution forgery, copied directly from our corporate merger files.
Clara stared at the document, her face turning pale as she realized the true depth of the conspiracy. "She didn't just want to separate us, Ethan. She wanted to take my daughter from me before she was even born."

"She wanted an heir she could control to secure her voting rights on the corporate board," I said, my fists clenching so tightly my fingernails bit into my palms. "This is the final piece of the puzzle, Clara. This proves premeditation for child abduction."
We immediately delivered the black folder to the federal prosecutors, sealing Eleanor’s fate before the trial could even begin.
