Chapter 19

Part 19: The New Portrait

The next weekend, we hired a local portrait photographer to visit our home. We stood in the sunlit living room, positioned in front of the wide windows overlooking the garden. Clara wore a simple, elegant cream dress, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders, her face glowing with genuine, absolute happiness. I wore a comfortable linen shirt, my arms wrapped securely around her waist as she held fourteen-month-old Maya between us.

The photographer clicked the shutter, capturing the exact, unscripted reality of our joy—the perfect contrast to the broken, manipulative image that had once defined our bedroom.

When the print arrived a week later, I placed it inside the beautiful, empty silver frame we had carried from the old apartment. I hung it on the center wall of our new bedroom, the polished glass reflecting the soft morning light.

Clara walked in, holding a basket of fresh laundry, and stopped to look at the photograph. A single tear of pure gratitude welled in her hazel eyes as she looked from the picture to my face.

"We replaced it, Ethan," she whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"We didn't just replace it, beautiful," I said, pulling her close. "We corrected the record."
