Chapter 14

Part 14: The Family Tribunal

The ultimate confrontation occurred during a private emergency meeting of the Whitmore Foundation board of directors downtown. The room was filled with aunts, uncles, and corporate stakeholders who had spent weeks whispering behind our backs.
I stood at the head of the conference table, with Clara sitting calmly at my right hand, holding a folder of certified financial transactions.
"Ethan, this is an internal family matter," my uncle Raymond said, trying to reclaim his authoritative stance. "We can settle Eleanor’s debts privately without involving the federal prosecutors. We don't need to ruin the foundation's corporate credit line over a marital dispute."
"This isn't a marital dispute, Raymond," I said, my voice echoing clearly off the glass walls. "This is grand larceny and premeditated medical endangerment. Clara, show them the ledger."
Clara opened the folder, displaying a clear flowchart that connected the siphoned trust funds directly to Raymond’s own offshore development projects in Seattle. The room went completely silent, the confident executives suddenly looking pale and terrified.

"You knew about the withdrawals, Raymond," Clara said, her voice calm and terrifyingly precise. "You approved the forged authorization stamps because Eleanor promised to give you twenty percent of the liquidated trust shares once the divorce went through. You didn't just stay silent—you were an active accomplice."
Raymond opened his mouth to deliver a sharp, angry rebuttal, but the words died in his throat as two federal investigators walked into the boardroom, carrying a set of formal warrants. The family empire had finally run out of secrets.
