Chapter 12

Part 12: The Ultimatum at the Estate

Before the formal trial commenced, I had to face my father, Arthur Whitmore, who had been living in isolation at the family’s historic estate in Lake Forest, completely blind to his wife’s criminal operations.

I walked into the grand library, the air smelling of old paper and woodsmoke. My father sat by the fireplace, looking frail and hollowed out by the public scandal that had dismantled his retirement.

"Ethan," he said, his voice raspy as he looked up. "The newspapers... they're saying your mother tried to harm Clara. They're saying she stole from the foundation. Tell me it's an exaggeration."

I sat in the leather chair opposite him, placing the forensic report flat on the coffee table between us. "It's not an exaggeration, Dad. She monitored our home with hidden cameras, intercepted Clara's critical heart medicine notifications, and forged my signature to steal from my daughter’s educational fund."

Arthur stared at the evidence, his hands trembling as forty years of shared history with Eleanor crumbled into absolute dust. "I... I never knew. She told me she was managing the trust dividends for a new development project."

"You need to file for divorce, Dad," I said quietly, my voice carrying the unyielding weight of the maternal shield I had built for my family. "And you need to remove her name from the family foundation before the state revokes our non-profit status. If you stay aligned with her defense, I will take Maya and Clara, and you will never see your granddaughter again."

Arthur looked at me for a long, agonizing minute, the reality of his wife's malice finally breaking through his pride. Slowly, with a single, trembling nod, he picked up his phone and called his personal estate attorneys. "Do it," he whispered.
