Chapter 1 - The Silver Basin

The first thing I saw was Emily’s swollen hands submerged in a silver basin. The second was my mother’s bare foot resting on Emily’s shoulder as if my eight-month pregnant wife were a piece of furniture.

But the third thing was Dr. Vance, our family physician, calmly tapping the side of a glass syringe, preparing to drug my wife just to keep her quiet.

I had wanted to surprise Emily with breakfast. Instead, I walked through the grand mahogany doors of the Sterling manor at 9:00 AM and heard quiet, ragged sobbing echoing across the marble foyer.

“Scrub harder,” my mother, Eleanor, sneered. “This house belongs to my bloodline, not a parasite.”

Emily knelt in a damp maternity dress, tears falling into the soapy water. My younger brother, Liam, leaned against the staircase, filming everything with his phone, an ugly smirk plastered across his face.

“Mom’s teaching her gratitude before she gets put to sleep,” Liam chuckled when he noticed me. “Don’t ruin it, Dave.”

My mother turned slowly, her pearls catching the morning light. Her expression was ice. “David. You’re home early.”

Emily looked up at me. The emotion in her eyes wasn't relief—it was absolute terror. That hurt more than anything. It meant this wasn't the first time. She had learned not to expect rescue.

My unborn son kicked beneath her dress, visible even from the doorway. Something inside me snapped, but my face remained dead calm. I crossed the foyer, shoved Dr. Vance violently against the wall, lifted my mother’s foot off Emily’s shoulder, and gently pulled my wife to her feet.

“Pack a bag,” I said quietly.

Eleanor laughed, a dry, grating sound. “For her? The doctor is taking her to a private facility to rest—”

“For us.”

Liam lowered his phone, eyes narrowing. “You’re choosing this gold-digger over your own blood?”

I looked at the brutal red marks on Emily’s wrists, then down at the syringe rolling across the marble floor. “I’m choosing my family.”

My mother’s face hardened into a mask of pure venom. “You own nothing without me, David. The company, the estate—everything came from your father’s legacy.”

That was what she believed.

Upstairs, while Emily changed, she pulled a crumpled sheaf of papers from her coat pocket. “I found these in Liam’s study yesterday,” she whispered, trembling.

I stared at the documents. A massive $50 million line of credit borrowed against our family tech enterprise, Sterling Corp, secured using a forged copy of my signature. An automated wire execution order was set to trigger at midnight, funneling the funds into an offshore shell company owned by Eleanor and Liam. They weren't just trying to break my wife's spirit; they were setting a trap to bankrupt me, frame me for embezzlement, and strip me of custody.

My mother appeared in the doorway, leaning against the frame with an insufferable smirk. “You’ve been careless, David. Emily is clearly mentally unstable. It's time for you to step aside.”

I looked at the forged signature, then at the grandfather clock ticking in the hall.

9:15 AM. 14 hours and 45 minutes remaining.

I closed the folder, tucked it into my coat, and looked my mother dead in the eye.

“You’re right,” I said softly. “Someone in this house has been extremely careless.”

She smiled, believing I had surrendered. I picked up our suitcases, took Emily’s hand, and walked out of the mansion without looking back.
