Chapter 4 - Rattling the Cage

4:00 PM — 8 Hours Remaining

Leaving the board room in total disarray, I took the private elevator straight down to the basement garage. Eleanor’s threat was real: in the eyes of the law, a corrupt medical diagnosis could stall my legal countersuits just long enough for their midnight transfer to go through. Once the $50 million vanished into the Caymans, they would declare Sterling Corp insolvent, sell off its assets, and leave Emily and me holding the criminal liability.

I needed to break Dr. Vance.

I caught him exiting his private clinic on 5th Avenue. As he reached for his Mercedes door handle, Marcus stepped out from behind a pillar, blocking his path, while I stepped up behind him.

“Dr. Vance,” I whispered near his ear.

Vance jumped, dropping his keys. “David! Look, what happened this morning... I was just acting in the best interest of your wife’s psychiatric safety—”

I grabbed him by his lapels and pinned him against his vehicle. “You brought a Class-B sedative into my home to subdue a heavily pregnant woman on the orders of a woman who pays your offshore retainer.”

“You can’t prove that!” he choked out.

I pulled out my phone and played a video. It was crisp, high-definition footage of Vance tapping the needle in my foyer, complete with clear audio of Liam saying, “Mom’s teaching her gratitude before she gets put to sleep.”

“Liam thought he was filming Emily’s humiliation,” I said, leaning in close. “What he didn't realize was that our home security system syncs directly to my private cloud every minute. I have you on camera attempting unlawful medical assault on a minor’s mother.”

Vance’s knees went weak. “David... please. Eleanor promised me two million from the restructuring. She told me you were soft! She said you’d never fight back!”

“Where is the signed medical affidavit you gave her?” I demanded.

“In... in my office safe,” Vance stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead. “I haven't submitted it to the state board yet! She told me to hold it until midnight!”

“You’re going to open that safe,” I said. “And then you’re going to make a short phone call to the Medical Board.”
