Chapter 2 - Safe House and Shadow Funds

10:30 AM — 13 Hours, 30 Minutes Remaining

I drove through the gates of the estate, keeping my hand tightly squeezed around Emily’s. She was shaking in the passenger seat, staring out at the passing trees of suburban Connecticut.

“David, what are we going to do?” she whimpered, rubbing her belly. “They have Dr. Vance. They have the board of directors. If they trigger that transfer at midnight, the federal authorities will come for you.”

“They think they’ve trapped a mouse, Em,” I said, pulling into the underground parking garage of a modest glass high-rise downtown. “They forgot who built the maze.”

I brought her to a secure, unlisted apartment I had purchased three years ago—a failsafe I prayed I’d never need. I settled her onto the couch, handed her a glass of water, and locked the smart-bolt doors.

While my family saw me as the dutiful, quiet eldest son who merely managed Sterling Corp’s day-to-day operations, they had overlooked one vital detail: I was the principal architect of the company’s core cybersecurity and financial infrastructure. Eleanor believed my father left the empire to her. In reality, my father left her the title, but he gave me the master keys.

Sitting at my encrypted workstation, I opened a black-screen terminal.

If Eleanor and Liam wanted to execute a $50 million offshore transfer at midnight, they needed three things: my biometric authorization, the corporate primary server key, and the sign-off from the lead auditor.

They thought my forged signature would bypass the auditor. What they didn't know was that six months ago, I secretly routed all high-yield transactions through a secondary, automated audit protocol named Aegis.

I dialed my chief security officer and only true ally in the firm, Marcus.

“David?” Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker. “Liam just called an emergency board meeting for 2:00 PM. They’re claiming you’ve suffered a nervous breakdown and are stepping down.”

“Let them hold the meeting,” I said coldly. “Marcus, I need you to quietly isolate Server Node 4. Don't touch the midnight transfer order yet. Let the bait sit.”

“What’s the play, boss?”

“They want a war,” I replied. “I’m going to give them a total collapse.”
