Chapter 8 - Checkmate in the Dark

11:15 PM — 45 Minutes Remaining

The two men stepped forward, pulling silenced pistols from their coats.

Liam let out a whimpering cry and dropped to his knees. “Mom! No! Not this!”

“Silence!” Eleanor yelled, her eyes wild with unhinged ambition. “At midnight, $50 million moves out. Tomorrow morning, David’s tragic 'accidental death' will be announced, leaving his pregnant widow with nothing, and his estate entirely under my conservatorship. It’s clean. It’s perfect.”

I didn't move. I didn't flinch. I simply looked at my watch.

11:18 PM.

“You’re right about one thing, Mother,” I said, my voice echoing calmly through the rainy warehouse. “Everything has to be clean.”

I raised my left hand and clicked a small remote detonator button in my palm.

Instantly, blinding floodlights snapped on around the perimeter of the warehouse ceiling, throwing Eleanor and her hired thugs into stark relief. From the shadows, half a dozen armed officers from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division stepped out with weapons raised.

“Federal Agents! Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads!”

The two thugs immediately dropped their guns and raised their hands. Eleanor froze, her umbrella slipping from her fingers, clattering into the puddles.

“What... what is this?” she gasped, staring into the blinding lights.

Marcus walked out from behind a line of shipping crates, holding a laptop displaying a real-time feed.

“You thought I came here to negotiate, Eleanor?” I said, walking up to her as the agents moved in to hand-cuff her men. “I lured you here to commit a federal felony on tape. Attempted extortion, conspiracy to commit murder, and wire fraud.”

“You... you set me up!” she screamed, her composure finally breaking into ugly, hysterical rage. “I am your mother!”

“My mother died a long time ago,” I said coldly.
