Chapter 10 - The Dawn

6:00 AM — Next Morning

The sun broke over the horizon, casting a warm, golden light across the city sky. The fifteen-hour nightmare was over.

I returned to the safe house. The apartment was quiet. Emily was asleep on the bed, her breathing calm and steady. I walked over, sat softly on the edge of the mattress, and rested my hand gently on her warm, swollen belly.

My unborn son kicked against my palm—a strong, vibrant pulse of life.

Emily stirred, opening her eyes. She looked at me, scanning my face for the outcome.

“It’s done,” I whispered, smiling gently. “Eleanor and Liam are in federal custody. The company is safe. And you... you own the foundation that just inherited their entire fortune.”

Tears welled up in her eyes, but this time, they were tears of profound relief. She pulled my hand to her cheek. “We’re free?”

“We’re free.”

Three weeks later.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new office, looking out at the city skyline. Sterling Corp was undergoing a complete corporate restructuring, scrubbed clean of my mother’s influence.

My phone rang. It was an unlisted line from the state penitentiary.

I answered and held the phone to my ear without speaking.

“David...” Eleanor’s voice came through the receiver. She sounded tired, aged, but the sharp venom was still lingering beneath her tone. “You think you’ve won. You think you can just build a picture-perfect life with that girl.”

“I don't think so, Eleanor. I know so,” I replied calmly.

“You haven't checked father's secondary offshore trust in Switzerland, have you?” her voice dropped into a low, chilling whisper. “The one he set up before he died. The one that activates only if I am incarcerated... The one that names your son as the sole beneficiary, under a clause that gives me legal guardianship of him the moment he is born.”

My blood ran cold.

“Enjoy your peace while it lasts, my son,” Eleanor chuckled softly before the line went dead.

I lowered the phone slowly, staring out at the sunlit city.

In the other room, Emily called out my name, her voice filled with joyful anticipation as she prepared the nursery.

I looked down at my hands, feeling the cold weight of a brand-new war rising on the horizon.
