Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Well

8:45 PM — 3 Hours, 15 Minutes Remaining
I returned to the safe house to check on Emily. She was sitting on the bed, watching the news, her hands resting protectively on her stomach. The color had returned to her face, but the anxiety in the room was palpable.
“Is it almost over?” she asked quietly.
“Almost,” I said, kissing her forehead. “Dr. Vance’s confession is secured. The medical threat is dead.”
“What about your mother?”
“She’s isolated,” I replied. “She thinks she still controls the midnight wire transfer. She doesn't know that Liam is currently betraying her to save himself.”
Emily looked down, a sad smile playing on her lips. “She hated me from the day you brought me home, David. Not because I was poor... but because she realized she couldn't control you through me.”
“She never owned me, Em. And tonight, she loses everything she built on lies.”
My phone chimed. A text from Liam: I have the ledger. Meeting you at the harbor office in 30 minutes.

I grabbed my coat. “Stay locked in. Marcus has two armed guards outside the door. I’ll be back before the clock strikes twelve.”
As I drove toward the harbor, heavy storm clouds began to roll in over the city, dark and suffocating. I knew Eleanor wouldn't go down without a final, desperate move.
