Chapter 5 - The Fractured Alliance

6:30 PM — 5 Hours, 30 Minutes Remaining
By early evening, the cracks in my mother’s operation began to widen into grand canyons.
I was sitting in a dark booth at a quiet diner near the docks when my phone buzzed. It was Liam.
“What did you do to Vance?” Liam yelled into the receiver, his voice tight with rising panic. “He just called Mom crying, saying he’s revoking the medical evaluation and pulling out!”
“I didn't do anything, Liam,” I replied casually, taking a sip of black coffee. “I just showed him the light. How’s the countdown going?”
“Listen to me, Dave,” Liam’s tone suddenly shifted from aggressive to desperate. “You don't understand. Mom isn't just taking the $50 million to leave you with nothing. She’s taking it because the company is already drowning! She made bad investments in overseas real estate two years ago. We owe $30 million to some very dangerous private lenders. If that midnight transfer doesn't go through, they aren't coming for her—they’re coming for me! She put my name on the loan guarantees!”
I sat in silence for a moment, absorbing the revelation.
Eleanor hadn't just targeted Emily out of sadistic hatred; she was using Emily’s vulnerability to drive me away so she could execute a desperate cash grab to save her own skin—and she was fully prepared to throw her favorite son, Liam, under the bus to do it.
“She sacrificed me, Liam,” I said softly. “What makes you think she won't sacrifice you?”
“Help me, Dave,” he begged, the arrogant bully from this morning completely reduced to a frightened boy. “Tell me how to stop the transfer!”

“It’s too late to stop it from your end,” I told him. “The execution code Eleanor set up is automated. But if you want to survive midnight, bring me the master ledger from her safe at the estate. You have two hours.”
I hung up before he could answer.
