Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

1:45 PM — 10 Hours, 15 Minutes Remaining

The top floor of Sterling Tower smelled of expensive leather and corporate arrogance. I walked into the board glass doors unannounced fifteen minutes before Liam’s scheduled coup.

The room froze. Eleanor was sitting at the head of the conference table, sipping espresso. Liam was standing by the projector, adjusting his silk tie. Four major board members—all long-time cronies bought out by my mother—looked visibly uncomfortable.

“David,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping an octave. “This is a private executive session. You are in no mental state to be here.”

“I’m feeling remarkably sharp, Mother,” I said, pulling out a chair at the opposite end of the table.

Liam smirked, folding his arms. “Give it up, Dave. We’ve already drafted the press release. ‘CEO takes temporary leave following domestic crisis.’ You walked out today. You abandoned your duties.”

“I left a crime scene,” I corrected, resting my hands on the table. I looked directly at the board members. “Before you vote on whatever fiction my mother has fed you, you might want to review the internal audit logs for the offshore account Valence Holdings in the Cayman Islands.”

The color instantly drained from Liam’s face. Eleanor’s teacup clinked sharply against her saucer.

“What is he talking about?” asked Arthur Vance, the board chairman and cousin to the corrupt Dr. Vance.

“It’s a bluff,” Liam blustered, stepping forward. “He’s losing his mind!”

“Is it?” I pulled a flash drive from my pocket and tossed it onto the glass table. It slid right to the center. “On that drive is the digital paper trail of the $50 million fraudulent line of credit initiated under my forged signature. Traced directly to Liam’s personal IP address and Eleanor’s private trust.”

Silence heavy as lead fell over the room.

Eleanor didn't panic. She slowly leaned back, a chilling smile touching her lips. “A compelling story, David. But you forgot one thing.” She tapped her phone. “The board answers to the majority shareholder. Which is me. And as of 9:00 AM today, Dr. Vance filed a formal medical evaluation certifying that your wife is mentally incapacitated, and that you are exhibiting severe paranoid delusion. This drive is inadmissible in any corporate review.”

She thought she had used the medical system to seal my lips. She thought Dr. Vance’s fake diagnosis was her ironclad shield.

I slowly stood up. “Then it’s a good thing I didn’t bring this to the board for a review.”
