Chapter 12 - My own financial mistake

I moved money.

Too much.

Four days after the assault, before Dana had finished advising me, I transferred $18,000 from our joint savings into a new individual account.

Why?

Fear.

Christopher had already moved money to Florence without telling me.

I wanted enough to pay:

Attorney.

Rent if needed.

Insurance.

Living expenses.

I told myself half the account was mine anyway.

That was not the proper legal analysis.

Dana called.

“Did you move eighteen thousand?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you not call me?”

“I panicked.”

“Move it?”

“No.”

“Spend?”

“Only the consultation fee.”

“How much?”

“Six hundred.”

She told me to disclose the transfer immediately.

We did.

The money remained frozen by agreement for marital accounting except for approved expenses.

Christopher’s lawyer called it:

“Financial self-help.”

Accurate.

I hated when their side used accurate phrases.

It did not make my transfer equal to eighteen months of undisclosed payments to Florence.

It was still something I had done without agreement.

I owned it.

Victimhood did not turn my mistakes into wisdom.
