Chapter 15 - The hallway camera

There was no camera inside our bedroom.
Good.
Privacy had existed somewhere in that house.
But we did have a doorbell camera and hallway motion sensor camera facing the upstairs landing because of a break-in scare two years earlier.
The device did not capture the slaps.
It captured:
Me carrying the suitcase upstairs forty minutes before.
Florence entering the bedroom.
Christopher entering.
Then me leaving eleven minutes later.
My left cheek visibly reddened.
Suitcase closed.
No stolen silverware sticking out.
More importantly, audio from the upstairs hallway caught part of Christopher’s voice after the second slap.
“Don’t disrespect my mother!”
Not the strike.
The sentence.
Florence’s:
“That will teach a wife her place”
was faint but audible enough that experts later enhanced only through normal playback tools, not magical reconstruction.
Christopher’s attorney did not contest the basic words after review.
The criminal domestic-violence case no longer depended solely on my account against Florence’s.
Still, context would matter.
Christopher claimed I had pushed Florence first.
I had grabbed the jewelry pouch from her hand.
That was true.
Did that justify Christopher striking me twice minutes later?
No.

But the defense raised it.
The system did not require me to be motionless to deserve protection.
