Chapter 14 - Why Florence hated the box

Florence learned about Dad’s records during discovery.
She called my mother.
Mom answered before I could warn her not to.
Florence said:
“Robert has been keeping financial ammunition against Christopher for years.”
Mom replied:
“Robert kept records.”
Florence:
“Same thing.”
Mom surprised me.
“No.”
Then hung up.
Afterward Florence sent a long letter.
She claimed Christopher had financially carried me for years.
I earned more than him for four of our six married years.
She claimed her family paid for our wedding.
Actual accounting:
My parents paid approximately $17,000.
Florence paid $12,000.
Christopher and I paid the rest.
She claimed she furnished our house.
She gave us:
Dining table.
Guest bed.
$8,000 wedding gift.
Generous.
Not ownership.
Why did facts differ so much?
Because Christopher had been curating them.
He told Florence:
His bonus cleared debt.
His side funded the down payment.
He paid most household bills.
My parents were “comfortable but hands-off.”
None completely true.
He had not invented every story maliciously.
He liked looking capable.
Florence liked believing her son was capable.
I had rarely corrected either because keeping score felt petty.

Then the score became the moral justification for slapping me.
Suddenly details mattered.
