Chapter 9 - Dad’s secret becomes my problem too

I was furious with Christopher.
I was also furious with Dad.
That surprised him.
“You helped him lie to me.”
Dad said:
“I didn’t know he would keep lying.”
“You knew after six months.”
“Yes.”
“A year.”
“Yes.”
“Two years.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
I continued:
“You watched me marry him.”
“Yes.”
“You walked me down the aisle knowing he had thirty thousand dollars of debt I didn’t know about.”
Dad’s eyes filled.
That stopped me for half a second.
Then:
“You decided his embarrassment mattered more than my consent.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
No defense.
That helped.
Not enough.
He said:
“I thought if I told you after the wedding, it would feel like I was trying to interfere.”
“You were interfering by keeping quiet.”
“I know that now.”
Mom sat beside him.
She said:
“I knew your father helped Christopher. I thought it was around ten thousand.”
Dad looked at her.
Apparently there were secrets inside the secret.
Mom said:
“Robert.”
“I should’ve told you too.”
Great.
Three marriages learning communication simultaneously.
Dad handed me the original promissory note.
Dana advised:
“Do not take the only original.”
So we made certified copies and placed the original back in the wooden box.
The box itself stayed with Dad.
No magic evidence folder traveling through every chapter.
Just documents.
