Chapter 8 - The civil standby

I needed more belongings.

Medication records.

Winter coat.

Personal files.

Work equipment.

Shoes.

The rest of my clothes.

Dana recommended arranging a civil standby through local law enforcement if available.

No dramatic eviction.

No midnight entry.

I scheduled a time.

Christopher was home.

Florence too.

An officer stood in the hallway while I packed.

I brought my mother and a written inventory.

Florence followed me from room to room.

“That vase was a wedding gift.”

“Staying.”

“The mixer.”

“Staying.”

“Those towels.”

I stared.

“Florence.”

The officer said:

“Ma’am, let her gather personal clothing.”

She folded her arms.

Christopher stood at the bedroom door.

My cheek was less swollen by then.

He looked tired.

“Are you really doing this?”

“Yes.”

“You brought a cop.”

“I brought a witness.”

“That’s dramatic.”

I almost laughed.

Then saw the old wedding photograph above the nightstand.

For one second I wanted to take it.

I didn’t.

It belonged to both of us.

I took the small framed picture of my grandmother from the dresser.

Florence said:

“That frame was from our Christmas exchange.”

I looked at the officer.

He looked exhausted.

Christopher whispered:

“Mom, stop.”

First time.

Too late.

I finished packing.

Before leaving, Christopher said:

“You can still come home.”

I looked at him.

“Would your mother leave?”

May you like

He did not answer.

That was enough.
